Dubbo Zoo, officially known as Taronga Western Plains Zoo, is a sprawling open-range zoo that offers a unique safari-like experience in the heart of New South Wales. Set on over 300 hectares of natural bushland, this zoo lets you get up close to a vast array of African, Asian, and Australian animals, many roaming in spacious paddocks. It's a must-visit for families and wildlife enthusiasts, and a perfect break from a long road trip along the Lasseter Highway.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least a full day to explore the zoo properly – it's huge. The best approach is to hire a bicycle (available on-site) or take the hop-on-hop-off bus to cover the 6 km circuit. Arrive early to beat the heat and catch the animals when they're most active. If you're driving the Lasseter Highway, consider an overnight stay in Dubbo to give yourself a relaxed day here.
