Douglas Daly Region

Straddling the Stuart Highway about 200 kilometres south of Darwin, the Douglas Daly Region is a lush pocket of Top End wilderness that surprises travellers expecting only red dust and spinifex. Here, the Daly River flows year-round, carving out a landscape of towering paperbark wetlands, monsoon vine forests, and dramatic sandstone escarpments. This is prime territory for fishing (barramundi, saratoga), birdwatching, and soaking in natural hot springs — all without the crowds of Kakadu.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers base themselves here for 2–3 nights to properly unwind and explore. Arrive early to secure a campsite at Douglas Hot Springs or one of the riverfront campgrounds. Spend your first full day fishing or kayaking on the Daly, the second day exploring Litchfield’s waterfalls (a 45-minute drive), and the third morning soaking in the hot springs before heading south. If you’re on a tight schedule, you can hit the highlights in a long day trip from Darwin, but you’ll wish you’d stayed longer.
