Douglas Daly Region
Straddling the Stuart Highway about 200 kilometres south of Darwin, the Douglas Daly Region is a lush pocket of Top End wilderness that surprises travellers expecting only red dust and spinifex. Here, the Daly River flows year-round, carving out a landscape of towering paperbark wetlands, monsoon vine forests, and dramatic sandstone escarpments. This is prime territory for fishing (barramundi, saratoga), birdwatching, and soaking in natural hot springs — all without the crowds of Kakadu.
Highlights & What to See
- Daly River Crossing & Fishing: The lifeblood of the region, this perennial river offers some of the Territory’s best barramundi fishing. Even if you don’t fish, the riverbank is a serene spot for a picnic while watching freshwater crocodiles slide off logs.
- Douglas Hot Springs: A series of thermal pools set among pandanus palms, where you can soak in 35°C water as the bush comes alive with birds at dawn and dusk. The main pool is easily accessible, but a short walk leads to more secluded cascades.
- Oolloo Crossing: A quieter alternative to the main river crossing, this spot is favoured by locals for its sandy banks and excellent swimming (no crocs reported, but always check conditions).
- Florence Falls & Wangi Falls (Litchfield NP): While technically in Litchfield, these two iconic waterfalls are just a short drive west of the Daly region and make for an easy day trip. Florence Falls offers a plunge pool for swimming; Wangi Falls has a lovely walking track.
- Daly River Mango Farm: A working mango orchard that opens its café during the dry season (May–October), serving mango smoothies, ice cream, and hearty bush tucker inspired meals.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers base themselves here for 2–3 nights to properly unwind and explore. Arrive early to secure a campsite at Douglas Hot Springs or one of the riverfront campgrounds. Spend your first full day fishing or kayaking on the Daly, the second day exploring Litchfield’s waterfalls (a 45-minute drive), and the third morning soaking in the hot springs before heading south. If you’re on a tight schedule, you can hit the highlights in a long day trip from Darwin, but you’ll wish you’d stayed longer.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Litchfield National Park: Just east of the Daly region, this park is a must for its waterfalls, magnetic termite mounds, and swimming holes. Combine with a night or two at the hot springs.
- Adelaide River: Famous for its jumping crocodile cruises and the Adelaide River Inn’s huge burgers — a fun stop on the drive from Darwin.
- Batchelor: The historic mining town near Litchfield offers quirky museums, a golf course, and the Berry Springs Nature Park for another swim.
- Katherine & Nitmiluk Gorge: About 2 hours south, the Katherine region offers canoeing in Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) and the thermal springs at Mataranka — perfect for extending your Top End road trip.
