Douglas Daly Hot Springs is a natural oasis hidden in the Northern Territory's outback, where thermal waters bubble up through the earth to create a series of inviting pools along the Daly River. This is a place to soak, relax, and reconnect with nature, far from the crowds of more touristy hot springs. The journey here is an adventure in itself, taking you through rugged savannah landscapes and past ancient termite mounds.
Highlights & What to See
- Soak in the thermal pools – The main attraction, these natural hot springs maintain a blissful temperature around 40°C (104°F) year-round. Find your own spot along the riverbank where the hot water mixes with the cooler river.
- Swim in the Daly River – After a hot soak, cool off in the clear, flowing waters of the Daly River. Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles basking on the banks – they're generally shy but worth respecting.
- Birdwatching – The area is a haven for birdlife, including rainbow bee-eaters, kingfishers, and whistling kites. Early morning is best for spotting them.
- Camp under the stars – The basic campground adjacent to the springs offers a true outback experience. Fall asleep to the sounds of the bush and the gentle flow of the river.
- Explore the surrounding savannah – Take a short walk to discover the unique flora, including pandanus palms and paperbark trees, and scan for wallabies and goannas.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least half a day to fully enjoy the springs and the river. Many visitors stay overnight at the campground, which allows for a sunset soak and an early morning swim – the best times to avoid the heat and crowds. If you're on a tight schedule, a couple of hours is enough for a quick dip and a picnic, but you'll likely wish you had longer.
