About 27 kilometres south of Katherine, Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park is a surprising underworld of ancient limestone and living fossils. These tropical karst caves, formed more than 500 million years ago, offer a cool escape from the Top End heat and a fascinating glimpse into subterranean ecology. Guided tours lead you through cathedral-like chambers decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and helictites, while the surrounding bushland is home to wallabies and rare birds. It’s an easy, rewarding detour on the Lasseter Highway or a quick trip from Katherine.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Set aside about two hours in total: the guided cave tour runs for roughly an hour, and you’ll want another hour to explore the nature walk and picnic. If you’re driving the Lasseter Highway, it’s a perfect mid-morning or late-afternoon stop. Combine with a morning at Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park) for a full day of Top End highlights.
