About 27 kilometres south of Katherine, Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park is a surprising underworld of ancient limestone and living fossils. These tropical karst caves, formed more than 500 million years ago, offer a cool escape from the Top End heat and a fascinating glimpse into subterranean ecology. Guided tours lead you through cathedral-like chambers decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and helictites, while the surrounding bushland is home to wallabies and rare birds. It’s an easy, rewarding detour on the Lasseter Highway or a quick trip from Katherine.
Highlights & What to See
- Guided Cave Tour – The only way to see the caves; a one-hour walk through the main chamber, past the ‘Crystal Spring’ and the eerie ‘Bat Room’, where orange horseshoe bats roost.
- Living Fossils – Spot the rare ghost bat and the tiny orange leaf-nosed bat, plus ancient stalactites still growing at a glacial pace.
- Nature Walk – A short loop around the park’s monsoon vine forest and escarpment, with interpretive signs about local flora and birdlife.
- Viewing Platform – Overlooks the Katherine River floodplain; prime spot for sunset birdwatching, especially for rainbow bee-eaters and red-tailed black cockatoos.
- Picnic Area – Shaded tables and a barbecue make it a pleasant lunch stop amid the bush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside about two hours in total: the guided cave tour runs for roughly an hour, and you’ll want another hour to explore the nature walk and picnic. If you’re driving the Lasseter Highway, it’s a perfect mid-morning or late-afternoon stop. Combine with a morning at Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park) for a full day of Top End highlights.
