Redbank Gorge is a striking natural amphitheatre carved through the rust-red quartzite of the West MacDonnell Ranges. A perennial waterhole sits at the base of the towering cliffs, creating a dramatic contrast with the surrounding desert. This is one of the most rewarding spots along the Lasseter Highway, offering a genuine outback experience away from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim or float through the gorge – the deep, clear waterhole is perfect for a refreshing dip, and with a noodle or inflatable, you can drift through the narrow chasm, watching the walls close in above you.
- Walk to the lookout – a short but steep climb (about 20 minutes) rewards you with panoramic views over the gorge and the surrounding rust-coloured ranges.
- Spot black-footed rock-wallabies – these shy marsupials are often seen on the cliffs at dawn or dusk, adding a wildlife encounter to your visit.
- Photograph the light – the gorge is at its most photogenic in the late afternoon when the sun illuminates the red rock and the water mirrors the sky.
- Combine with nearby natural wonders – the gorge is close to other West MacDonnell highlights like Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen Gorge, making it easy to explore multiple sites in one trip.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least two to three hours to fully appreciate Redbank Gorge. This gives you time for the lookout walk, a swim or float through the gorge, and a relaxed picnic by the waterhole. If you plan to hike the longer Larapinta Trail section that passes through here, you will need a full day. The gorge is best visited in the cooler months (April to September) when the water is most inviting.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ormiston Gorge – a spectacular gorge with a permanent waterhole and excellent walking trails, just a 30-minute drive east.
- Glen Helen Gorge – another beautiful gorge with a wide waterhole and a historic homestead, about 20 minutes east of Redbank.
- Standley Chasm – a narrow chasm with vertical walls, best visited at midday when the sun illuminates the red rock (around 45 minutes east).
- Alice Springs – the regional hub, offering supplies, accommodation, and cultural attractions like the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Desert Park (about 1.5 hours east).
- Finke Gorge National Park – home to the ancient palm-filled Palm Valley, a unique ecosystem about two hours south-east.
