Longreach is a remote, character-filled settlement on the Lasseter Highway in the Northern Territory, serving as a gateway to the majestic Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon). This tiny outpost offers a genuine taste of the Red Centre, with a roadhouse, a campground, and a profound sense of isolation beneath vast desert skies. It's the perfect place to refuel, stretch your legs, and soak up the raw, silent beauty of the Australian outback before or after tackling the iconic canyon.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk: The star attraction of the area, this 6 km loop offers breathtaking views of 300-metre sandstone cliffs, the lush 'Garden of Eden' waterhole, and the vast desert beyond. Start early to avoid the heat.
- Kings Creek Station: A working cattle station that offers helicopter flights over the canyon, quad bike tours, and a chance to experience station life. Their café serves legendary camel burgers.
- Kings Canyon Resort: Even if you're not staying, pop in for a cold drink on the terrace as the sun sets the canyon walls ablaze. The resort also has a swimming pool and a small gallery of Indigenous art.
- Stargazing: With zero light pollution, the night sky here is a celestial spectacle. Lie back and watch the Milky Way stretch from horizon to horizon.
- Lasseter's Cave: A short detour south of the highway, this cave is linked to the mysterious disappearance of prospector Harold Lasseter, whose story adds a layer of intrigue to the region.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers use Longreach as a base for one or two nights. Arrive in the afternoon, settle in, and tackle the Kings Canyon Rim Walk early the next morning (allow 3–4 hours). You can then explore Kings Creek Station or simply relax before continuing your journey. If you're short on time, a long stopover for lunch and a walk to the canyon lookout is still worthwhile.
