Rising from the ochre plains of South Australia, the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park is a dramatic landscape of ancient, folded mountains and deep gorges. This is country that holds deep cultural significance for the Adnyamathanha people, and walking here feels like stepping into a living geological and cultural museum. The park’s rugged beauty, with its towering quartzite ridges and abundant wildlife, makes it a must-visit for any traveller exploring the outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges: Two spectacular gorges that cut through the ranges, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting—look for red kangaroos, emus, and yellow-footed rock-wallabies. The Brachina Gorge Geological Trail is a fascinating self-drive route through 800 million years of Earth’s history.
- Wilpena Pound: A natural amphitheatre formed by a 17-kilometre-long basin of mountains. For the best views, take the short walk to the Wangara Lookout or, for the more adventurous, hike to St Mary Peak for a panoramic vista.
- Arkaba Rock Art Site: An important Aboriginal site where you can see ancient rock engravings and paintings. It’s a sacred place, so please treat it with respect.
- Rawnsley Bluff: A striking sandstone bluff that offers one of the most scenic walks in the park. The Rawnsley Walk is a challenging but rewarding full-day hike.
- Bunyeroo Valley: Famous for its stunning sunsets and sunrises, when the light paints the cliffs in shades of red and gold. It’s a photographer’s dream.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly appreciate the park, allow at least two full days. This gives you time to drive the scenic gorges, do a couple of short walks, and perhaps tackle one longer hike. If you’re a keen walker or photographer, three days would be ideal. The park is easily combined with a self-drive itinerary along the Flinders Ranges Way.
