Erldunda is a tiny roadhouse settlement on the Lasseter Highway, serving as the last fuel and supplies stop before the gates of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. This dusty outpost has a raw, frontier feel, with the red desert stretching to every horizon. It’s not a destination in itself, but a crucial staging post for the iconic Red Centre road trip, offering a glimpse of station life and a chance to stock up before the final push to the Rock.
Highlights & What to See
- Erldunda Roadhouse – The heart of the settlement: grab a pie, fuel up, and chat with travelers swapping tales of the Stuart and Lasseter Highways. The small shop has basic groceries and camping supplies.
- Emu Farm – A quirky, low-key attraction where you can see emus up close; it’s a hit with kids and a genuine outback experience.
- Camel Farm – Spot a few resident camels, remnants of the region’s Afghan cameleer history, often visible from the highway.
- Star Gazing – With zero light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular; pull over at the roadhouse or a nearby rest area for an unforgettable celestial show.
- Red Centre Landscape – The drive in and out is the real highlight: endless spinifex, mulga scrub, and the occasional wedge-tailed eagle soaring overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Erldunda is a 15–30 minute stop for fuel and snacks, or an overnight stay if you’re camping or caravanning (the roadhouse has a basic campground). Most travelers use it as a quick pit stop between Alice Springs (200 km north) and Yulara (200 km south). If you’re not in a rush, an overnight lets you enjoy a quiet outback sunset and sunrise without the crowds.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – A 3-hour drive east on the Luritja Road; the rim walk is a must-do for dramatic sandstone cliffs and the Garden of Eden.
- Alice Springs – The gateway to the Red Centre, 2 hours north; explore the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Desert Park, and the historic Telegraph Station.
- Mount Connor – A lesser-known mesa (often called “Fooluru”) visible from the Lasseter Highway; great for a photo stop and a picnic.
- Curtain Springs – Another roadhouse 100 km south, with a small museum and a scenic lookout over salt lakes.
