A short but rewarding climb above Alice Springs, Anzac Hill offers one of the best vantage points in the Red Centre. From its summit you can survey the entire town, the surrounding MacDonnell Ranges and, on a clear day, the distant outline of Mount Gillen. It’s a place that blends panoramic views with a solemn war memorial, making it a meaningful stop for history buffs and photographers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- War Memorial – The obelisk at the top commemorates Australian and New Zealand soldiers who served in both world wars and subsequent conflicts. It’s a quiet, reflective spot with plaques that tell the story of the region’s military history.
- 360° Panorama – The lookout provides sweeping views of Alice Springs, the Todd River (often dry), and the rugged West MacDonnell Ranges. Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical, when the landscape glows in shades of ochre and pink.
- Interpretive Signs – Scattered around the summit, these explain the area’s geology, Indigenous Arrernte culture, and early European settlement. They add context to the scenery.
- Short Walk to the Top – A paved path leads from the car park to the summit, making it accessible for most fitness levels. The walk is only a few hundred metres but offers lovely desert flora along the way.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to an hour for a relaxed visit. This includes the walk up, time to read the interpretive signs, and a good stretch to soak in the views. It’s an ideal early-morning or late-afternoon stop before or after exploring Alice Springs town centre. If you’re combining it with a day trip into the West MacDonnell Ranges, aim to visit Anzac Hill first for orientation.
