Palm Valley

Hidden deep in the Finke Gorge National Park, Palm Valley is a lush, ancient oasis that feels a world away from the red desert of Central Australia. This remarkable valley shelters a rare, living fossil — the red cabbage palm (Livistona mariae) — found nowhere else on Earth. A 4WD adventure along the sandy Finke River bed leads you to a landscape of towering cliffs, cool waterholes, and dense palm groves that have survived since the dinosaurs. For travellers exploring the Red Centre, Palm Valley offers a surprising and serene contrast to the vast, arid plains.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day exploring Palm Valley and the Finke Gorge National Park. Start early from Alice Springs (about 130 km west) to allow time for the 4WD drive and several walks. Half a day (4–5 hours) is enough to do the main walks and enjoy the scenery, but if you have a campervan, staying overnight at the Finke River Campground lets you experience the valley in the soft light of sunset and sunrise — when the palms glow golden and the birdlife is most active.
