Finke Gorge National Park
Finke Gorge National Park, a rugged desert oasis in the heart of Australia’s Red Centre, is one of the most significant cultural and natural landscapes you can explore on a self-drive Lasseter Highway itinerary. This ancient gorge, carved over millions of years by the Finke River – one of the world’s oldest river systems – is a sanctuary for rare flora and a place of deep spiritual importance to the Arrernte people. The park’s striking sandstone walls, towering red cliffs and palm-filled gorges feel like a secret world, far from the crowds of Uluru.
Highlights & What to See
- Palm Valley: The park’s star attraction, a lush valley sheltering the rare red cabbage palm (Livistona mariae) – a living relic from prehistoric times. The 4WD-only track from the car park leads you through a dramatic landscape of red rocks and cycads.
- Kalarranga Lookout Walk: A short but steep 1 km return hike to a viewpoint over the Finke River gorge, offering spectacular panoramas of the surrounding desert and the ancient riverbed.
- Mpaara Walk: A 5 km loop that follows the Finke River, passing Aboriginal rock art sites, waterholes and stands of ghost gums. Interpretive signs explain the cultural significance of the area to the Arrernte people.
- Finke River 4WD Track: A challenging but rewarding drive along the sandy riverbed (dry season only) – a true outback adventure that requires a high-clearance 4WD and careful attention to weather conditions.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for black-flanked rock-wallabies, dingoes, and a variety of birdlife including the rare grey honeyeater.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day to explore Finke Gorge National Park properly. The drive from the Stuart Highway (via the Lasseter Highway and the unsealed Ernest Giles Road) takes about 2–3 hours from Alice Springs, so plan to arrive early. Spend the morning on the Mpaara Walk and Kalarranga Lookout, then dedicate the afternoon to Palm Valley – allow at least 2–3 hours for the 4WD track and short walks there. If you’re camping, an overnight stay at the basic Finke River Campground (no facilities) lets you experience the park’s incredible starry skies and dawn light.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon): About 250 km west along the Lasseter Highway, this spectacular gorge offers the famous Rim Walk and is a natural partner to Finke Gorge.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: Continue west to the iconic red monolith and the domes of Kata Tjuta – the quintessential Red Centre experience.
- Alice Springs: The nearest major town, with excellent museums, the Alice Springs Desert Park and the historic Telegraph Station – perfect for resupplying before or after your 4WD adventure.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: A series of stunning gorges and waterholes (Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen Gorge) along Larapinta Drive, easily combined with a trip to Finke Gorge on a longer loop.
- Henbury Meteorites Conservation Reserve: A fascinating detour south of the Lasseter Highway, where meteorite impacts created a dozen craters – a unique geological stop.
