Ewaninga Ponds

Just 35 kilometres south of Alice Springs, Ewaninga Ponds offers a striking contrast to the arid MacDonnell Ranges: a permanent waterhole fringed by red cliffs and ghost gums, where birdlife congregates and ancient stories linger. This is a place to slow down, listen to the breeze rustling through spinifex, and watch the sun paint the rocks in fiery hues. The ponds are part of a sacred Aboriginal site, so respect and quiet observation are key.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the ponds and petroglyphs. If you're a keen birder or photographer, allow a half-day to fully absorb the tranquillity. The site is easily visited as a detour from a drive along the Lasseter Highway or as a half-day trip from Alice Springs – aim for late afternoon to catch the golden light and cooler temperatures.
