Just 35 kilometres south of Alice Springs, Ewaninga Ponds offers a striking contrast to the arid MacDonnell Ranges: a permanent waterhole fringed by red cliffs and ghost gums, where birdlife congregates and ancient stories linger. This is a place to slow down, listen to the breeze rustling through spinifex, and watch the sun paint the rocks in fiery hues. The ponds are part of a sacred Aboriginal site, so respect and quiet observation are key.
Highlights & What to See
- Permanent Waterhole: A rare oasis in the desert, perfect for birdwatching – look for zebra finches, honeyeaters, and the occasional black-footed rock wallaby.
- Aboriginal Rock Carvings (Petroglyphs): Scattered on the sandstone cliffs near the ponds, these ancient engravings of circles, animal tracks, and human figures are best viewed in the soft light of morning or late afternoon. Please do not touch.
- Scenic Picnic Spot: The shaded area under coolibah trees invites a leisurely lunch – bring your own supplies and pack out all rubbish.
- Stargazing: Far from city lights, the night sky here is immense. Lie on the warm sand and watch the Milky Way arc overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the ponds and petroglyphs. If you're a keen birder or photographer, allow a half-day to fully absorb the tranquillity. The site is easily visited as a detour from a drive along the Lasseter Highway or as a half-day trip from Alice Springs – aim for late afternoon to catch the golden light and cooler temperatures.
