Erldunda Roadhouse is a classic outback pit stop on the Lasseter Highway, roughly 200 km southwest of Alice Springs. It's the last reliable fuel, food, and accommodation before you strike west toward Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park or south to the South Australian border. Don't expect polish — this is a working roadhouse with a dusty, authentic outback vibe, a small general store, and a pub where locals and travellers swap stories. The real draw is its position as a strategic launchpad for exploring the Red Centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Fuel up and stock up — Erldunda is the final fuel stop before the 250 km stretch to Uluru. The shop sells basic groceries, ice, and camping supplies.
- Outback pub — Grab a cold beer and a counter meal at the roadhouse bar. The atmosphere is pure outback, with a pool table and friendly banter.
- Emu farm & wildlife — The roadhouse has a small enclosure with emus and kangaroos, a quick hit for kids or anyone keen to see native animals up close.
- Stargazing — With zero light pollution, the night sky here is phenomenal. Pull over at the roadhouse or a nearby rest area to soak in the Milky Way.
- Mount Connor lookout — A 20-minute drive west brings you to a viewpoint over the flat-topped Mount Connor (often mistaken for Uluru from a distance).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers stop for 30–60 minutes to refuel, grab supplies, and stretch their legs. If you're planning to camp overnight in the adjacent bush camp (basic but functional), allow a full afternoon and evening to enjoy the sunset and stars. For those on a tight schedule, a quick pit stop is enough — but the roadhouse is also a handy overnight if you're breaking the long drive from Alice Springs to Uluru.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park — 250 km west; the iconic monolith and domes are the main event of any Red Centre trip.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) — A 300 km drive north via the Luritja Road; the canyon's rim walk is spectacular.
- Alice Springs — 200 km northeast; the region's hub for culture, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and the West MacDonnell Ranges.
- Finke River & Chambers Pillar — Off the beaten track south of Erldunda; these require a 4WD but reward with ancient geology and solitude.
- Curtain Springs Roadhouse — 100 km west; another outback stop with fuel and a campground, closer to Uluru.
