Winding along the base of the mighty Kings Canyon, the Kings Canyon Creek Walk offers a cool, shaded alternative to the famous Rim Walk. This gentle trail follows a sandy creek bed lined with ancient cycads and ghost gums, leading to a serene waterhole where you can dip your toes and listen to the calls of spinifex pigeons. It’s a perfect introduction to the desert oasis of Watarrka National Park, revealing a different, quieter side of the gorge.
Highlights & What to See
- Garden of Eden waterhole – a tranquil pool fringed by reeds and paperbarks, ideal for a refreshing soak on a hot day.
- Cycad groves – the walk passes through one of the world’s most significant populations of the ancient Macrozamia macdonnellii, a living fossil.
- Birdwatching – keep an eye out for zebra finches, budgerigars, and the striking black-footed rock-wallaby that often appears on the cliffs above.
- Interpretive signs – informative panels explain the cultural significance of the area to the Luritja people and highlight the unique desert flora.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the 2.6 km return walk, which is mostly flat and suitable for most fitness levels. Early morning or late afternoon are best to avoid the midday heat and to catch the soft light on the canyon walls. If you’re short on time, this walk can easily be done before or after the Rim Walk, or as a relaxing end to a day of exploring.
