Fowlers Bay is a remote coastal hamlet on the far west coast of South Australia, where the Nullarbor Plain meets the Great Australian Bight. This is a place of profound solitude, with sweeping white dunes, turquoise waters, and a sky so vast it feels like you can see the curve of the Earth. It’s a dream for wildlife lovers, stargazers, and anyone craving a genuine off-the-beaten-path experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Fowlers Bay Dunes – Towering sand dunes that stretch for kilometres. Sandboard down them or simply marvel at the contrast of white sand against the deep blue sea.
- Whale Watching – From June to October, southern right whales calve in the bay. The viewing platform near the jetty offers excellent sightings.
- Pelican Feeding – A daily ritual at the jetty where pelicans gather, providing a charming and photogenic spectacle.
- Stargazing – As a Dark Sky Sanctuary, the night skies here are among the darkest in Australia. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.
- Historic Jetty – A 1901 jetty that once served the wool trade, now perfect for a sunset stroll or fishing.
- Nullarbor National Park – The park’s dramatic limestone cliffs and blowholes are a short drive west, offering rugged coastal views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend one night, but two are ideal to fully absorb the serenity. Arrive in the late afternoon to catch the sunset over the dunes, then enjoy a night of stargazing. The next day, explore the dunes or take a whale-watching cruise (seasonal). If you’re driving the Nullarbor, Fowlers Bay makes a perfect overnight stop, breaking up the long journey between Ceduna and Eucla.
