Flinders Ranges

Rising from the ochre dust of South Australia’s outback, the Flinders Ranges are a dramatic ancient landscape of rugged quartzite ridges, deep gorges, and vast saltbush plains. This is a place where 600-million-year-old geology meets living Aboriginal culture—the Adnyamathanha people have called these ranges home for tens of thousands of years. The light here is unforgettable: at dawn and dusk the mountains glow in shades of crimson, amber and violet, while the Milky Way blazes overhead at night. Whether you’re a hiker, a wildlife watcher, or a history buff, the Flinders Ranges deliver a raw, soul-stirring outback experience that pairs perfectly with a self-drive itinerary through South Australia.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least three full days to do the Flinders Ranges justice. Spend one day exploring Wilpena Pound and its walking trails, a second day on the scenic drives through Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges, and a third for a flight over the ranges or a visit to the Prairie Hotel. If you’re short on time, two days will let you hit the highlights, but you’ll be left wanting more. The best times to visit are autumn (March–May) and spring (August–October) when temperatures are mild and wildflowers carpet the land. Winter nights are cold but crystal-clear for stargazing.
