Plunging over a sheer sandstone escarpment into a deep, emerald plunge pool, Twin Falls is one of Kakadu's most spectacular waterfalls. Accessible only by boat or a short walk across a sandy creek bed, this remote cascade rewards those who make the journey with a refreshing swim and the thunderous roar of water in the heart of the escarpment country. The surrounding landscape is rugged and ancient, with towering cliffs and monsoon vine thickets that feel worlds away from civilization.
Highlights & What to See
- Boat shuttle across the creek: A short, scenic boat ride (seasonal) takes you across the South Alligator River to the start of the walking track—an adventure in itself.
- The plunge pool: The cool, clear water at the base of the falls is perfect for a swim, especially on a hot day. The pool is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and lush vegetation.
- Lookout over the escarpment: From the top of the falls (accessible via a steep, unmarked path for experienced hikers), you'll get sweeping views of the Arnhem Land plateau.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for white-bellied sea eagles, kingfishers, and the elusive black-necked stork (jabiru) along the river and around the falls.
- Ancient rock art: While not as extensive as at Ubirr or Nourlangie, there are small galleries near the falls that depict Dreamtime stories and local wildlife.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a half-day visit (3–4 hours) to fully experience Twin Falls. This includes the boat shuttle, the walk to the falls, time for a swim and photos, and the return journey. Most visitors combine it with a morning at Jim Jim Falls, as both are located along the same rough, unsealed road (4WD essential). Arrive early to avoid the midday heat and crowds, especially during the dry season (May to October).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Jim Jim Falls: Another iconic Kakadu waterfall, with a stunning plunge pool and a more challenging walking track. Just 15 km from Twin Falls along the same 4WD road.
- Nourlangie Rock: Famous for its ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries and panoramic views of the escarpment. About a 45-minute drive from the Twin Falls turn-off.
- Yellow Water Billabong: A premier wetland for wildlife cruises, where you can spot crocodiles, buffalo, and prolific birdlife. Located near the Kakadu Highway, about 1 hour south.
- Ubirr Rock: World-renowned for its rock art and sunset views over the Nadab floodplain. A longer drive (about 2 hours from Twin Falls) but worth combining for a full-day itinerary.
- Bowali Visitor Centre: A great stop to learn about Kakadu's culture and ecology, with exhibits and a walking trail. Located near Jabiru, about 1.5 hours from the falls.
