Jim Falls is a hidden gem in Kakadu National Park, offering a peaceful escape and a stunning plunge pool that feels like your own private oasis. Unlike the more famous waterfalls in the park, Jim Falls sees fewer visitors, making it perfect for a serene swim and a picnic surrounded by ancient escarpments.
Highlights & What to See
- Plunge Pool: The main attraction – a deep, clear pool at the base of the falls, ideal for a refreshing dip after a short walk.
- Bushwalking: The track to Jim Falls is a moderate 1.5 km walk each way, winding through monsoon forest and sandstone outcrops with birdlife and wildflowers.
- Scenic Escarpment Views: Along the trail, look for elevated views over the surrounding woodland and distant escarpments.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for wallabies, goannas, and a variety of birds, including rainbow bee-eaters and azure kingfishers.
- Picnicking: Pack a lunch and enjoy the tranquil setting – there are no facilities, so bring water and take all rubbish out.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate half a day for a relaxed visit. The walk takes about 1 hour return, but you’ll want to add at least an hour for swimming and soaking up the atmosphere. Combine with other sites in the southern part of Kakadu, such as Gunlom Falls or the nearby Maguk (Barramundi Gorge), for a full day of waterfall exploration. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light and fewer crowds.
