Gunbalanya (formerly Oenpelli) is a remote Aboriginal community on the northern edge of Kakadu National Park, offering an authentic immersion into living Indigenous culture. Perched on the East Alligator River with the Arnhem Land escarpment as a backdrop, this is a place where ancient rock art, vibrant community art centres, and the rhythms of traditional life converge. A visit here requires a permit, but the reward is a rare glimpse into one of the world’s oldest continuous cultures, with guided tours that reveal stories painted on stone and woven into daily practice.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate a full day to Gunbalanya. Most visitors arrive early morning, spend the morning on the Injalak Hill rock-art tour (about 2–3 hours), then browse the art centre and have lunch. The afternoon can be spent on a cultural walk or simply soaking in the atmosphere. Because access is via a permit and the unsealed road from Jabiru, it’s best to plan it as a day trip from Jabiru or Cooinda, allowing a relaxed pace.
