Deep in the heart of Kakadu National Park, Cooinda Lodge offers a rare blend of comfortable accommodation and raw wilderness. Set beside the serene Yellow Water Billabong, this lodge is the perfect launchpad for exploring the park's ancient escarpments, abundant wildlife, and rich Aboriginal culture. Whether you're a self-drive adventurer or joining guided tours, Cooinda provides a welcoming base with a restaurant, pool, and easy access to some of Kakadu's most iconic experiences.
Highlights & What to See
- Yellow Water Billabong Cruise – A must-do sunrise or sunset cruise through wetlands teeming with crocodiles, buffalo, and hundreds of bird species. The still waters mirror the floodplains in a spectacle of light and life.
- Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre – Just a short drive away, this centre offers immersive exhibits on Bininj/Mungguy culture, dreamtime stories, and traditional land management. A respectful and enlightening stop.
- Nourlangie Rock – A 30-minute drive leads to this majestic outlier with ancient rock art galleries and a dramatic viewpoint over the Arnhem Land escarpment. Allow at least an hour to walk the main loop.
- Jim Jim Falls & Twin Falls – Accessible via 4WD (check road conditions), these twin plunges are among Kakadu's most spectacular wet-season waterfalls. The plunge pool at Jim Jim is a refreshing reward after a rugged hike.
- Bowali Visitor Centre – Located near Jabiru, this centre provides excellent orientation, cultural displays, and a walking trail through monsoon forest. Pick up maps and ranger tips here.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves at Cooinda for two to three nights to fully experience Kakadu's highlights. A typical day starts with a Yellow Water cruise at dawn, followed by exploring Nourlangie and the cultural centre. A second day is best dedicated to a 4WD adventure to Jim Jim and Twin Falls (dry season only), with a late afternoon return. If you have a third day, consider a longer walk like the Barrk Sandstone Walk or a scenic flight over the escarpment. The lodge's central location means you can pace yourself without long drives each day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Jabiru – The park's main service town, 50 km north, with a supermarket, fuel, and the Bowali Visitor Centre. Good for supplies and a quick cultural stop.
- Ubirr – Famous for its sunset-view rock art and panoramic views over the Nadab floodplain. About 1.5 hours' drive from Cooinda, best visited in the late afternoon.
- Mary River National Park – South of Kakadu, this lesser-known wetland offers superb birdwatching, barramundi fishing, and a quieter wilderness experience. Combine for a longer Top End itinerary.
- Pine Creek – A historic gold-mining town on the Stuart Highway, about 90 minutes south. Worth a stop for its heritage buildings and as a gateway to Kakadu from Darwin.
- Litchfield National Park – While further afield (3 hours' drive), Litchfield's waterfalls and swimming holes make a perfect contrast to Kakadu's wetlands. Consider a side trip if you have extra days.
