Wauchope

Wauchope is a tiny, dust-blown outpost on the edge of the Red Centre, best known as the gateway to the magnificent Finke Gorge National Park. With a population you can count on one hand, this former telegraph station and cattle-ranching hub offers a genuine slice of remote Australian life. The main draw is the stark, ancient landscape of the Finke River – one of the world's oldest river systems – and its dramatic gorges, palm-filled pockets, and towering red cliffs. There's no town as such, just a roadhouse pub (the legendary Wauchope Hotel), a general store, and a handful of residents, but the isolation and raw beauty are precisely the point.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least one full day to explore Finke Gorge National Park, including the drive to Palm Valley and a few short walks. If you're a keen 4WDer or photographer, two days gives you time to tackle the longer tracks and soak up the solitude. Most visitors base themselves at the Wauchope Hotel for one or two nights, then continue north to Alice Springs (about 120 km away) or south towards the Stuart Highway.
