Perched on the edge of the West MacDonnell Ranges, Tyler Pass rewards travellers with a sweeping panorama that feels like the very heart of the Red Centre. This natural lookout, accessed via a short scramble from the Finke Gorge 4WD track, offers an unfiltered view over the ancient Finke River valley – a landscape of rugged gorges, spinifex-covered hills, and distant ochre cliffs that change colour with the shifting light. It’s a place where the silence is profound, broken only by the wind and the call of a wedge-tailed eagle circling above.
Highlights & What to See
- Panoramic lookout: The main draw is the 360-degree view from the rocky crest – particularly magical at sunrise or sunset when the ranges glow deep red.
- Finke River valley: Gaze down at one of the world’s oldest river systems, a sandy, flood-carved channel lined with ghost gums and red river gums.
- Geological wonder: The pass reveals layers of ancient sandstone and quartzite, part of the same formation that creates the famous Palm Valley.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies, euros (hill kangaroos), and a variety of desert birds such as the painted firetail.
- Photography: The dramatic light and stark, textured landscape make this a prime spot for landscape photographers – bring a wide-angle lens.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–60 minutes at the top of the pass, soaking in the views and taking photos. Factor in an extra 20 minutes for the short, steep walk from the car park (about 400m each way). If you’re visiting at sunrise or sunset, allow a little longer to watch the colours change. Tyler Pass is often combined with a day trip to Palm Valley, so you can easily spend half a day exploring the broader Finke Gorge National Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Hermannsburg Historic Precinct: A former Lutheran mission with well-preserved sandstone buildings and a fascinating insight into Aboriginal and European history, 20 km south.
- Ormiston Gorge: A stunning permanent waterhole and gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 90 km west of Alice Springs, with excellent swimming and walking trails.
- Alice Springs: The regional hub, 130 km north-east, where you can stock up on supplies, visit the Desert Park, or explore the town’s art galleries and cafes.
