Simpson Gap is a dramatic chasm carved through the West MacDonnell Ranges, just 18 km west of Alice Springs. This striking geological feature offers a classic Central Australian experience: a sheer quartzite gorge with a permanent waterhole at its base, surrounded by red cliffs and spinifex country. It's a perfect spot for a short walk, a swim (when conditions allow), or simply soaking in the ancient landscape.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Simpson Gap, enough time to do the short walk, enjoy the waterhole, and take in the scenery. It's an ideal stop on a half-day trip from Alice Springs or as part of a longer drive exploring the West MacDonnell Ranges. If you're keen on photography or birdwatching, allow extra time during the cooler morning or late afternoon.
