Simpson Gap is a dramatic chasm carved through the West MacDonnell Ranges, just 18 km west of Alice Springs. This striking geological feature offers a classic Central Australian experience: a sheer quartzite gorge with a permanent waterhole at its base, surrounded by red cliffs and spinifex country. It's a perfect spot for a short walk, a swim (when conditions allow), or simply soaking in the ancient landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- The Gap itself – a narrow cleft in the range, best viewed from the walking track that leads to the waterhole.
- Permanent waterhole – a rare, reliable water source in the desert, often attracting birdlife and offering a refreshing dip (check local advice for safety).
- Ghost gums – iconic white-barked trees clinging to the cliffs, a classic outback image.
- Short walking trails – the 1.5 km loop walk to the waterhole is easy and family-friendly; more adventurous walkers can connect to longer trails in the West MacDonnell Ranges.
- Sunset colours – the quartzite cliffs glow orange and red in the late afternoon light.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Simpson Gap, enough time to do the short walk, enjoy the waterhole, and take in the scenery. It's an ideal stop on a half-day trip from Alice Springs or as part of a longer drive exploring the West MacDonnell Ranges. If you're keen on photography or birdwatching, allow extra time during the cooler morning or late afternoon.
