Just 75 kilometres south of Alice Springs, Rainbow Valley is a stunning natural amphitheatre of ochre-red sandstone cliffs and bluffs that shift through a spectrum of colours at sunrise and sunset. This compact but dramatic reserve offers one of the Red Centre's most photogenic landscapes, with easy walks and a genuine outback camping experience that feels a world away from the tourist trail.
Highlights & What to See
- Rainbow Valley Conservation Reserve: The main attraction – a horseshoe-shaped cliff of banded sandstone that glows fiery orange, red and purple in the low-angle light. The short walk to the base of the cliffs is a must.
- Sunset Viewing Platform: A designated spot with interpretive signs that explain the geology. Arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset to watch the colour show unfold.
- Ewaninga Rock Carvings Conservation Reserve: Nearby, this small site features ancient petroglyphs (rock carvings) left by the Arrernte people, accessible via a short boardwalk.
- Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve: A dramatic sandstone pillar rising 40 metres from the plain, with a fascinating history as a landmark for early explorers and Afghan cameleers. It’s a 4WD-only track, but highly rewarding.
- Camping under the stars: The reserve has basic bush camping (no facilities) – perfect for an immersive outback night, with phenomenal stargazing.
Suggested Time to Spend
Rainbow Valley is best visited as a half-day trip from Alice Springs, ideally timed for late afternoon to catch sunset. If you’re camping, arrive in the late afternoon, enjoy sunset, camp overnight, and then explore the short walks in the morning light before heading back. Most travellers spend 2–4 hours here, but those with a 4WD and a love for solitude can easily stretch it to a full day by including Chambers Pillar.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs: The hub for supplies, accommodation and the famous Alice Springs Desert Park – a natural base for any Red Centre trip.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: Spectacular gorges, waterholes and walking trails (Ormiston Gorge, Simpsons Gap) that pair perfectly with Rainbow Valley for a central Australia itinerary.
- Finke Gorge National Park: Home to Palm Valley, a lush oasis of ancient cycads and red cliffs – a 4WD adventure that complements the desert landscapes.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: While a 4–5 hour drive away, many travellers combine Rainbow Valley with a longer loop through the Red Centre, stopping at Kings Canyon en route.
