Rising to 1380 metres, Mount Sonder is the fourth-highest peak in the Northern Territory and a defining landmark of the West MacDonnell Ranges. Its distinctive twin peaks are best appreciated from the Larapinta Trail, which traces the spine of the range and offers one of Australia’s great multi-day walks. For travellers with limited time, the summit can be reached on a challenging but rewarding day walk that delivers panoramic views over the rugged desert landscape, especially magical at sunrise. This is a place where the raw outback colours – deep reds, ochres and spinifex greens – feel almost surreal, and the silence is broken only by the wind.
Highlights & What to See
- Larapinta Trail Section 10 – The classic route to the summit, a 12–14 km return walk from the Redbank Gorge car park. The trail climbs steadily through spinifex and ghost gums to the rocky summit, where 360-degree views of the West MacDonnells unfold.
- Sunrise from the summit – Start in the dark (head torch essential) to reach the top for dawn. The play of light across the ranges and the Simpson Desert in the distance is unforgettable.
- Redbank Gorge – A permanent waterhole at the base of the mountain, perfect for a post-walk swim in the warmer months. The gorge is also a great spot for birdwatching and photography.
- Aboriginal cultural significance – The mountain is part of the Arrernte people’s dreaming stories. Respect the land and take only photographs.
- Stargazing – With minimal light pollution, the night sky around Mount Sonder is spectacular. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on clear nights.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors tackle the summit walk as a full-day outing, allowing 6–8 hours return from the car park. If you’re not up for the full climb, a half-day is enough to explore Redbank Gorge and enjoy the lower reaches of the trail. For Larapinta Trail hikers, Mount Sonder is often the triumphant end point of the 223 km trek – budget at least 14 days for the whole trail, or 2–3 days if walking just the final sections.
