Mount Anza rises dramatically from the red desert of the Finke Gorge National Park, a striking sandstone monolith that draws hikers and photographers seeking solitude and sweeping views over Australia's ancient landscape. Its rugged summit offers a panoramic reward that few other lookouts in the Northern Territory can match, with the Finke River – one of the world's oldest river systems – snaking through the valley below.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit hike: A challenging but rewarding 6 km return trail that climbs steeply through spinifex and rocky outcrops. The top provides 360-degree views of the West MacDonnell Ranges and the desert oak plains.
- Finke River lookout: On the way up, pause at the natural platform overlooking the ancient riverbed – a prime spot for sunrise photography when the rocks glow ochre and gold.
- Desert oak groves: Scattered along the lower slopes, these iconic trees (Allocasuarina decaisneana) create a surreal, park-like setting. Listen for the rustle of wind through their needle-like foliage.
- Wildflowers and wildlife: After rain, the slopes burst with everlastings and Sturt's desert peas. Keep an eye out for peregrine falcons and euros (hill kangaroos) that navigate the cliffs with ease.
- Cultural significance: The area is part of the traditional lands of the Arrernte people; the mountain and river hold deep Dreamtime stories. Respect the site and leave no trace.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to properly experience Mount Anza. The summit hike takes 3–4 hours round trip, including time for photos and rest stops. Start early morning to avoid the midday heat (October to March) and to catch the best light. If you're less keen on the climb, a shorter walk to the first lookout takes about 1 hour. Combine with a visit to the nearby Palm Valley for a full day of exploration in Finke Gorge National Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Palm Valley: A lush oasis of red cabbage palms and cycads, just a 30-minute drive away. Walk the Kalaranga Lookout trail for a different perspective on the gorge.
- Finke River 4WD track: A scenic drive along the sandy riverbed (4WD only) that leads to remote camping spots and waterholes.
- Hermannsburg Historic Precinct: 40 minutes north, this former Lutheran mission offers insights into Aboriginal and European history, plus the famous Hermannsburg Potters.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: Extend your trip with gorges and walks at Ormiston Pound, Glen Helen, and Simpsons Gap – all within 1–2 hours' drive.
