Litchfield National Park
Litchfield National Park is a stunning Top End wonderland of cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear plunge pools, and ancient termite mounds, just a 90-minute drive from Darwin. This compact park offers some of the Northern Territory's most accessible and rewarding swimming holes, making it a perfect day trip or overnight escape. The sealed roads and well-marked walking trails mean you can easily explore its highlights without a 4WD, though a four-wheel drive unlocks more remote corners. Don't miss the chance to cool off beneath a waterfall after a walk through monsoon forest – it's pure tropical bliss.
Highlights & What to See
- Florence Falls: A stunning double waterfall plunging into a deep, emerald pool – swim under the cascade or take the 160-step walk down for a refreshing dip.
- Wangli Falls: One of the park's most popular spots, with a wide curtain of water and a large swimming hole, plus a short loop walk through lush monsoon rainforest.
- Buley Rockholes: A series of natural rock pools and small cascades – perfect for a relaxing soak and a great spot for families.
- Termite Mounds: Marvel at the towering cathedral and magnetic termite mounds scattered across the termite plains, especially impressive in the late afternoon light.
- Tolmer Falls: A spectacular single-drop waterfall that plunges into a deep gorge – admire it from the lookout (swimming not permitted here).
- Lost City: A fascinating landscape of weathered sandstone pillars that resemble ancient ruins, accessible via a short 4WD track or a longer walk.
- Tabletop Track: A 39 km loop for experienced hikers, taking in waterfalls, savanna woodlands, and monsoon forests over 2-3 days.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day (8-10 hours) driving the main loop and stopping at the key waterfalls and walks. This allows time for a few swims, a picnic lunch, and short hikes. If you want to tackle the Tabletop Track or explore the 4WD-only areas, plan for at least two days. Overnight camping at one of the park's campgrounds (like Florence Falls or Wangli Falls) lets you experience the park in the quiet early morning and late afternoon when the crowds thin out.
