Larrimah is a tiny, off-the-beaten-track settlement in the Northern Territory that feels like a living museum of outback eccentricity. Once a bustling stop on the old Stuart Highway, today it's best known for its quirky roadside attractions, including a giant pink panther and a collection of rusted vintage cars. The real magic, though, lies in the surrounding red-earth landscapes and the sense of stepping into a forgotten chapter of Australian road-trip history.
Highlights & What to See
- Giant Pink Panther & Roadside Oddities – Larrimah’s claim to fame is its sprawling collection of quirky sculptures and abandoned vehicles, including a faded pink panther and a vintage fire truck. It’s a photographer’s paradise and a window into outback humour.
- Larrimah Pub (The Daly Waters Pub Experience) – The local pub is a classic outback watering hole, covered in memorabilia and serving cold beers. Chat with the characters behind the bar and hear tall tales of the bush.
- Finke Gorge National Park – Just a short drive away, this park offers dramatic desert scenery, ancient cycad groves, and the iconic Palm Valley. The 4WD track through the gorge is an adventure in itself, with towering red cliffs and oasis-like waterholes.
- Old Stuart Highway Ruins – Wander the remnants of the original highway, with abandoned service stations and derelict buildings that whisper stories of the region’s pioneering past.
- Stargazing in the Desert – With zero light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular. Lie back on the red dirt and watch the Milky Way stretch from horizon to horizon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Larrimah itself can be seen in an hour or two – enough time to snap the pink panther, grab a drink at the pub, and soak up the quirky vibe. However, to fully appreciate the surrounding area, plan for at least a full day. This allows for a 4WD exploration of Finke Gorge National Park and a leisurely lunch at the pub. If you’re self-driving, it’s a perfect overnight stop to break up the journey between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.
