Erldunda Roadhouse is a classic outback pit stop on the Stuart Highway, roughly 200 km south of Alice Springs. It’s the last fuel and supplies point before you head west into the Finke Gorge National Park or south towards the South Australian border. The roadhouse has a motel, campground, a basic shop, and a petrol station, plus a small bar and restaurant serving hearty meals. It’s not a destination in itself but a practical and friendly base for exploring the surrounding red‑centre landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- Finke Gorge National Park – The main reason to stop here: access to Palm Valley and the ancient Finke River, with its towering red cliffs and rare Livistona palms. A 4WD is essential for the rough track.
- Stuart Highway views – The drive south from Alice Springs offers endless horizons, spinifex plains, and the occasional camel sighting.
- Roadhouse hospitality – Grab a cold drink, chat with locals, and stock up on fuel, water, and basic groceries. The roadhouse also has a small collection of outback memorabilia.
- Star‑gazing – With minimal light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular. Bring a blanket and look for the Southern Cross.
- Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve – A striking sandstone pillar 40 km east, accessible via 4WD track (allow half a day).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers overnight here before or after visiting Finke Gorge National Park – one night is enough. If you’re just refuelling, allow 30 minutes to stretch your legs and grab supplies. For a deeper exploration of the region (including Palm Valley and Chambers Pillar), plan two nights at Erldunda, using it as a base for day trips.
