Camping in Finke Gorge National Park is an immersive outback experience, where the ancient red cliffs and palm-filled gorges create a dramatic backdrop for a night under the stars. The park's main campground, Woodlands, offers basic facilities and easy access to the iconic Finke River and the famous Palm Valley. This is a place to disconnect and truly appreciate the raw beauty of Australia's Red Centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Woodlands Campground: The primary camping area with fire pits (when permitted), picnic tables, and pit toilets. It's a short walk to the Finke River, perfect for a sunset dip.
- Palm Valley: A 4WD-only drive leads to this lush oasis filled with red cabbage palms, some over 1,000 years old. The 5km Kalaranga Lookout walk offers panoramic views.
- Finke River 4WD Track: One of Australia's oldest river systems, the sandy riverbed serves as a 4WD track. Drive along it to explore remote gorges and billabongs.
- Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular. Lie back and spot the Milky Way, Southern Cross, and countless shooting stars.
- Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies, dingoes, and a variety of birdlife, especially around the waterholes.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two nights to fully appreciate the park. Day one: set up camp, explore the immediate area around Woodlands, and take a short walk to the river. Day two: tackle the Palm Valley drive and the Kalaranga Lookout walk, then return for a campfire dinner. If you have a high-clearance 4WD, consider an extra night to explore the Finke River 4WD track further south.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs: The gateway town to the Red Centre, just 130km north. Stock up on supplies and visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service Museum.
- Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon): About 300km southwest, Kings Canyon offers spectacular rim walks and a stunning desert oasis.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: A series of gorges and waterholes along Larapinta Drive, perfect for day trips from Alice Springs or as a stop en route to Finke Gorge.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: While further afield (450km southwest), it's a classic Red Centre itinerary addition. Combine with Kings Canyon for an epic loop.
