Standley Chasm, a dramatic cleft in the West MacDonnell Ranges, is one of the Northern Territory's most photogenic natural wonders. The sheer quartzite walls, glowing fiery orange when the midday sun hits, rise 80 metres above a sandy floor. This is a sacred site for the Arrernte people, and its narrow passage feels both ancient and intimate. A short, easy walk leads to the chasm, making it perfect for travellers of all ages.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Standley Chasm, including the walk and time for photography. If you're keen on a guided talk or want to enjoy a leisurely picnic, allow up to half a day. The chasm is at its best in the cooler morning or late afternoon, but the iconic light show happens around noon.
