Carved through ancient red sandstone by the Finke River, Glen Helen Gorge is one of the most dramatic and photogenic spots in the West MacDonnell Ranges. The sheer cliffs – stained ochre, rust and purple – frame a permanent waterhole that mirrors the sky at dawn and glows amber at sunset. This is classic Red Centre country, with a palpable sense of deep time: the Finke is among the world’s oldest river systems. A short walk leads to the water’s edge, where birdlife, cool relief and the sheer scale of the gorge create a powerful sense of place.
Highlights & What to See
- Sunset at the gorge – the western-facing cliffs catch the last light, turning the rock a deep fiery red. Bring a chair and a drink to watch the colours shift.
- Glen Helen waterhole – a permanent pool that’s perfect for a refreshing dip after a day’s drive. The water is clear and cool, even in summer.
- Gorge walking trail – an easy 1.5 km return walk that follows the riverbed into the gorge, with excellent views of the cliffs and chances to spot black-footed rock wallabies.
- Glen Helen Homestead – a historic outback lodge with a cold beer, basic meals, and a verandah overlooking the range. A good spot to refuel and chat with locals.
- Birdwatching – look for zebra finches, honeyeaters and the occasional peregrine falcon soaring above the cliffs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours to walk the gorge trail, swim and soak in the views. If you can, time your visit for late afternoon and stay for sunset – that extra hour transforms the experience. Many travellers combine it with a stop at Ormiston Gorge (20 minutes east) for a full day exploring the West MacDonnells.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ormiston Gorge – just 20 km east, with a longer walk and a permanent waterhole even larger than Glen Helen’s
- Ochre Pits – a sacred Aboriginal site 30 km east where ochre was traditionally mined; the multi-coloured cliffs are a photographer’s dream
- Serpentine Gorge – a narrow, less-visited gorge 40 km east with a short walk to a lookout over the range
- Redbank Gorge – 50 km west, the most remote of the West MacDonnell gorges, with a challenging walk to the summit of Mount Sonder
- Alice Springs – 130 km east, the region’s hub for supplies, accommodation and cultural experiences
