Ellery Creek Bighole is a stunning natural waterhole nestled in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 90 kilometres west of Alice Springs. This permanent waterhole, carved into ancient red quartzite, is framed by towering cliffs and ghost gums, creating an oasis in the arid outback. It's a popular spot for cooling off with a swim, picnicking, or simply soaking up the dramatic desert landscape. The area holds deep cultural significance for the Arrernte people, and visitors are encouraged to respect the site.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the Bighole: Plunge into the deep, clear waterhole surrounded by steep red rock walls – a refreshing break from the heat.
- Ellery Creek Walking Track: A 3.5 km loop trail that climbs the ridge for panoramic views of the waterhole and the surrounding ranges.
- Picnic by the Water: Shady spots with tables make it an ideal lunch stop; bring plenty of water and sun protection.
- Wildlife Spotting: Look for black-footed rock-wallabies, birdlife, and the occasional perentie goanna.
- Stargazing: The remote location offers incredibly dark skies – perfect for after-dark astronomy.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here for a swim and short walk, but you could easily linger for a half-day if you want to hike the full track and relax by the water. It's a great stop on a day trip from Alice Springs along the Larapinta Drive, or as part of a multi-day self-drive itinerary through the West MacDonnell Ranges.
