Alice Springs Desert Park is an immersive wildlife and cultural experience that brings the arid heart of Australia to life. Set against the backdrop of the West MacDonnell Ranges, this open-air sanctuary showcases the desert’s surprising biodiversity through three distinct habitats: desert rivers, sand country, and woodlands. It’s less a zoo and more a living museum, where you can walk among free-roaming animals and learn about Indigenous land management.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors need about 2.5 to 3 hours to explore the three habitat zones and catch the bird show. If you’re keen on the cultural talk and want to linger at each exhibit, allow a half-day. The park opens early (7:30 am) and is best visited in the morning or late afternoon when animals are most active and the light is soft. You can easily combine it with a morning at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre or an afternoon drive to Simpsons Gap.
