Imagine stepping into a crystal-clear thermal pool surrounded by towering paperbark trees and lush tropical vegetation. Mataranka Hot Springs, about 400 km south of Darwin, is a natural oasis where the 34°C water flows from the Great Artesian Basin. It's a serene spot for a soak, rich in Indigenous and outback history, and a perfect break on the Stuart Highway journey.
Highlights & What to See
- Soak in the main pool – The spring-fed swimming area is the centrepiece, with constant warm water and a sandy bottom. Arrive early to claim a spot before the crowds.
- Walk the Waterhouse River Trail – A short, easy walk through monsoon forest leads to a quieter section of the river where you can spot birds and possibly freshwater crocodiles.
- Visit Elsey National Park – The springs are within this park, which also offers camping, bushwalking, and the historic Elsey Homestead (from the book We of the Never Never).
- Brolga viewing – During the dry season (May–Oct), brolgas and other waterbirds frequent the area.
- Learn local history – The springs have been a gathering place for the Mangarrayi people for millennia, and later a rest stop for overland telegraph workers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours enjoying the springs and a short walk, but you could easily fill half a day if you explore Elsey National Park fully. To avoid the midday heat and crowds, aim to arrive by 9am. If you're self-driving from Darwin, plan a stop here for a refreshing dip before continuing south to Katherine or the Top End.
