Leliyn, better known as Edith Falls, is a stunning series of cascading waterfalls and plunge pools nestled in the northern reaches of Nitmiluk National Park, about 60 km north of Katherine. The falls are a refreshing oasis in the dry season, with clear, cool water perfect for swimming beneath the main drop or in the expansive lower pool. The surrounding escarpment and savannah woodlands offer excellent short walks and birdwatching opportunities, making it a favorite stop for travellers exploring the Top End.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim at the main plunge pool – The large, deep pool at the base of the 18-metre waterfall is the star attraction; take a dip and feel the spray on your face.
- Walk to the upper pools – A 2.6 km loop trail leads to smaller, quieter pools above the main falls, with panoramic views over the valley.
- Spot wildlife – Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles (harmless in these parts), wallabies, and a dazzling array of birds, including rainbow bee-eaters and red-tailed black cockatoos.
- Picnic by the creek – Shaded picnic areas with barbecues make it easy to linger for lunch while listening to the rush of water.
- Learn about Jawoyn culture – Interpretive signs along the walkways share the significance of this area to the traditional owners, the Jawoyn people.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours at Leliyn, which is enough for a swim, the short upper pools walk, and a relaxing picnic. If you want to explore more of the Nitmiluk National Park (including Katherine Gorge), plan for a half-day or combine it with a morning at the gorge. The site is best visited in the dry season (May–October) when the water is clear and the weather is comfortable for walking.
