Buley Rockhole is one of Litchfield National Park’s most beloved swimming spots — a series of cascading rock pools and waterfalls that feel like nature’s own water park. About a 90-minute drive from Darwin, this is where locals come to cool off on a hot day, and it’s easy to see why: crystal-clear water tumbles over sandstone ledges into deep, emerald pools surrounded by monsoon forest. The sound of rushing water and the earthy scent of wet pandanus leaves set the scene for a classic Top End escape.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the cascading pools — The rockhole is a series of terraced pools connected by small waterfalls. You can slide down smooth rock chutes or simply float in the deeper pools; the water is refreshingly cool year-round.
- Explore the upper and lower sections — A short walking track follows the creek, giving access to quieter pools above the main area. Early morning or late afternoon, you might have a pool almost to yourself.
- Combine with nearby Litchfield attractions — Buley Rockhole is just a few minutes’ drive from Florence Falls and the Lost City walk, so it’s easy to make a full day of swimming and hiking in the park.
- Spot wildlife — Keep an eye out for freshwater turtles, rainbow bee-eaters, and if you’re lucky, a shy black-footed tree-rat scurrying through the undergrowth.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 1–2 hours at Buley Rockhole itself — enough time to swim in several pools, relax on the rocks, and take in the scenery. Most visitors combine it with other Litchfield highlights, so a half-day to full-day trip from Darwin is ideal. Arrive early (before 9 am) to beat the crowds and enjoy the peaceful morning light filtering through the trees.
