Berry Springs
Just 45 minutes south of Darwin, Berry Springs is a lush pocket of tropical greenery where crystal-clear spring-fed pools offer the perfect escape from the Top End heat. This is a favourite weekend retreat for locals, who come to picnic beneath paperbark trees and cool off in the gentle, sandy-bottomed swimming holes. The springs are part of Berry Springs Nature Park, a compact but beautiful reserve that also provides a glimpse into the region's wartime history.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the spring-fed pools – The main draw: three interconnected pools with water so clear you can see the sand ripples. The water is a constant 26°C, making it refreshing without being a shock.
- Follow the Dripstone Walk – A short 1.2 km loop through monsoon forest, where you’ll spot giant banyan figs and hear the constant trickle of water over limestone formations.
- Picnic under the paperbarks – Shaded tables and free gas barbecues are scattered along the creek; grab a spot early on weekends.
- Visit the WWII airstrip ruins – A short walk from the car park leads to the remains of an old RAAF airstrip, used during the war to defend Darwin.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal – arrive mid-morning, swim, have a leisurely picnic, and do the short walk before heading back. If you’re combining with Litchfield National Park, you could stop here for a quick dip on the way, but it deserves at least a couple of hours to fully unwind.
