Once a bustling WWII airbase and later a uranium mining hub, Batchelor is now a quiet gateway to Litchfield National Park, offering a fascinating slice of Top End history alongside lush monsoon forests and plunging waterfalls. This tiny town, just 90 minutes south of Darwin, makes an ideal base for exploring the park's swimming holes and hiking trails without the crowds of Kakadu.
Highlights & What to See
- Litchfield National Park – The star attraction: swim beneath Florence Falls, Wangi Falls, and Buley Rockhole; hike to Tjaetaba Falls; and marvel at the magnetic termite mounds.
- Batchelor Museum – Housed in the old town hall, this museum tells the story of the area's Aboriginal heritage, WWII airbase history, and the uranium mining era (Rum Jungle mine).
- Rum Jungle Mine Site – Visit the historic uranium mine (now a rehabilitated site) and the adjacent Rum Jungle Homestead, a heritage-listed building.
- Coomalie Cultural Centre – Learn about local Aboriginal culture and view art and artifacts from the Wagait and Malak Malak peoples.

Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors use Batchelor as a base for 2–3 days to fully explore Litchfield. Allow half a day for the town's museums and historic sites. If you're self-driving from Darwin, you can comfortably see Batchelor's highlights in a day, but staying overnight lets you hit the park's waterfalls early and avoid the midday heat.
