Streaky Bay, on the far west coast of South Australia, is a laid-back fishing town where the Eyre Peninsula meets the Great Australian Bight. Its name comes from the streaks of light and dark on the water caused by seagrass beds and shifting sands. This is a place for epic coastal walks, fresh oysters, and watching southern right whales breach just offshore. It’s a perfect stop on a self-drive journey between the Nullarbor and the Flinders Ranges.
Highlights & What to See
- Baird Bay – Swim with sea lions and dolphins in their natural habitat; a bucket-list wildlife encounter.
- Murphy’s Haystacks – Ancient, wind-sculpted pink granite boulders rising from a wheat field; surreal and photogenic.
- Smooth Pools & the Granites – Natural rock pools and blowholes on the coast, perfect for a picnic at sunset.
- Streaky Bay Jetty – Cast a line for whiting or just watch the pelicans; the sunsets here are legendary.
- Calca Peninsula – A remote coastal walk offering stunning cliffs, secluded beaches, and excellent birdwatching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Streaky Bay at least two full days. Day one: explore the town, the jetty, and the nearby Granites. Day two: drive to Baird Bay (book ahead for the sea-lion swim) and then to Murphy’s Haystacks. If you’re continuing west, an extra morning allows for a walk on the Calca Peninsula or a kayak in the sheltered bay.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nullarbor Plain – The vast limestone plateau stretches west; stop at the Head of Bight to see whales (June–October).
- Ceduna – A coastal town known for its oysters and the start of the Nullarbor crossing; 100 km east.
- Port Lincoln – The seafood capital of Australia, with shark-cage diving and the Boston Bay wine region; 400 km south-east.
- Gawler Ranges – Ancient volcanic landscapes, gorges, and wildlife; a rugged detour north-west of Streaky Bay.
- Coober Pedy – The opal-mining town underground; a quirky inland option if you’re heading north.
