Simpson Gap is a dramatic chasm carved through the red quartzite of the West MacDonnell Ranges, just 18 km west of Alice Springs. This iconic gap is a sacred site for the Arrernte people and a top spot for a short walk, rock wallaby spotting, and soaking up the stark beauty of the Central Australian landscape. The permanent waterhole at the base of the cliffs attracts birdlife and offers a cool respite on a hot day.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpson Gap Walk: An easy 1 km return trail leads through ghost gums and spinifex to the gap’s sheer walls and waterhole. Look for black-footed rock wallabies on the cliffs at dawn or dusk.
- Waterhole & Birdwatching: The permanent waterhole is a lifeline for zebra finches, honeyeaters, and corellas. Bring binoculars for close-up views.
- Cultural Significance: The gap is a dreaming site for the caterpillar ancestors (Yeperenye). Take time to read the interpretive signs and respect the area as a living cultural landscape.
- Photography: The contrast of red rock, blue sky, and green river red gums makes for stunning photos, especially in the soft light of late afternoon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–45 minutes for the walk and time to sit quietly by the waterhole. If you're a keen photographer or birdwatcher, budget 1–1.5 hours. Simpson Gap works well as a quick stop on a half-day drive west from Alice Springs, or as part of a longer exploration of the West MacDonnell Ranges.
