Stretching through the heart of Australia’s Northern Territory, the Red Centre Loop is a spectacular self-drive circuit that immerses you in the raw, ancient beauty of the outback. This route connects iconic landmarks like Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and Kings Canyon, offering a journey through ochre-red landscapes, star-filled skies, and profound Indigenous culture. It’s a road trip that feels both epic and intimate, with each stop revealing a new facet of this timeless land.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru (Ayers Rock) – Gaze upon the colossal sandstone monolith at sunrise or sunset when its colour shifts from fiery orange to deep purple. Walk the base or join a ranger-led Mala Walk to learn about Anangu stories.
- Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) – A cluster of 36 domed rock formations, best explored on the Valley of the Winds walk. The sheer scale and rust-red hues are mesmerising.
- Kings Canyon – Hike the Rim Walk for jaw-dropping views of 100-metre-high sandstone cliffs, weathered into beehive-like domes. The Garden of Eden waterhole offers a cool respite.
- Watarrka National Park – Beyond Kings Canyon, discover hidden gorges, cycad groves, and desert wildlife like red kangaroos and perentie lizards.
- Field of Light – At Uluru, Bruce Munro’s installation of 50,000 glowing spheres creates a dreamlike landscape after dark. Book ahead for this ethereal experience.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a minimum of three days to complete the loop comfortably, but five to seven days is ideal if you want to linger. Start from Yulara (Uluru’s resort town), spend two days exploring Uluru and Kata Tjuta, then drive to Kings Canyon (about 3 hours) and dedicate a full day to the canyon. The loop returns via the Lasseter Highway, making it a perfect long-weekend itinerary. Pace yourself with early starts to avoid midday heat, and plan for at least one night camping under the outback’s dazzling stars.
