Ormiston Gorge and Pound is a stunning natural amphitheatre in the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering some of the most dramatic and accessible outback scenery in Australia. The towering red quartzite cliffs, permanent waterhole, and diverse wildlife make it a must-visit for hikers and nature lovers exploring the Red Centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Pound Walk – A 7.5 km loop that takes you through the gorge and around the pound, offering panoramic views of the surrounding ranges and a chance to spot rock wallabies and birdlife. Allow 3–4 hours.
- Ghom (Ghost) Gum – A striking white-barked ghost gum clinging to the cliff face near the waterhole, famously photographed by Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira.
- Permanent Waterhole – A popular swimming spot in summer, with cool, clear water surrounded by red cliffs. It’s a refreshing stop after a hike.
- Ghost Gum Lookout – A short, steep climb rewards you with breathtaking views over the gorge and the waterhole.
- Aboriginal Cultural Significance – The area is part of the Tjuwanpa Outstation and holds deep spiritual importance for the Arrernte people. Interpretive signs explain traditional uses of plants and the Dreamtime stories.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day (3–5 hours) here, which is enough to complete the Pound Walk and enjoy a swim. If you’re short on time, a 1-hour walk to the waterhole and lookout is rewarding. For a full experience, plan to arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and capture the best light on the cliffs.
