Carved by the Finke River through the red quartzite of the West MacDonnell Ranges, Glen Helen Gorge is a stunning natural amphitheatre about 130 km west of Alice Springs. The sheer walls rise dramatically from the waterhole, creating a place of profound stillness and deep cultural significance to the Arrernte people. The changing light on the rock—from fiery orange at sunrise to deep purple at dusk—is unforgettable.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Glen Helen Gorge, which is enough for the short walk, a swim and some quiet contemplation. If you're combining it with a longer exploration of the West MacDonnell Ranges, plan for a half-day stop that includes a picnic lunch. The gorge can be visited year-round, but summer (Dec–Feb) can be extremely hot—aim for early morning or late afternoon.
