Carved by the Finke River through the red quartzite of the West MacDonnell Ranges, Glen Helen Gorge is a stunning natural amphitheatre about 130 km west of Alice Springs. The sheer walls rise dramatically from the waterhole, creating a place of profound stillness and deep cultural significance to the Arrernte people. The changing light on the rock—from fiery orange at sunrise to deep purple at dusk—is unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Gorge Walk: A short, easy trail leads to a lookout over the waterhole and cliffs. For a longer experience, continue along the Finke River bed (check conditions first).
- Swimming & Canoeing: The permanent waterhole is a popular spot for a refreshing dip or a paddle—cool and clear, with fish and birdlife all around.
- Sunset Viewing: The western orientation of the gorge makes it a prime sunset spot. The cliffs glow gold, then crimson, as the sun drops behind the range.
- Birdwatching & Wildlife: Look for black-footed rock-wallabies on the cliffs, and listen for the calls of zebra finches, honeyeaters and birds of prey.
- Cultural Significance: The gorge is a sacred site for the Arrernte people, part of the caterpillar dreaming. Please treat the area with respect.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Glen Helen Gorge, which is enough for the short walk, a swim and some quiet contemplation. If you're combining it with a longer exploration of the West MacDonnell Ranges, plan for a half-day stop that includes a picnic lunch. The gorge can be visited year-round, but summer (Dec–Feb) can be extremely hot—aim for early morning or late afternoon.
