Ndhala Gorge
Nestled in the rugged Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park, Ndhala Gorge is a serene and lesser-visited chasm that rewards those who venture beyond the more famous gorges. Its ancient rock walls, etched with Aboriginal art, and the whisper of water trickling over pebbles create a meditative atmosphere that feels a world away from Alice Springs.
Highlights & What to See
- Aboriginal rock art sites – Explore galleries of ochre paintings and petroglyphs left by the Arrernte people, some believed to be thousands of years old. Look for depictions of ancestral beings and ceremonial symbols.
- Scenic gorge walk – A relatively easy 2.5 km return trail follows a dry creek bed flanked by red cliffs and ghost gums. After rain, you might see a temporary waterfall cascading over the gorge walls.
- Birdwatching and wildlife – Listen for the calls of zebra finches, spinifex pigeons, and black-footed rock-wallabies that shelter in the cool recesses of the gorge.
- Photography at golden hour – The low-angle sunlight sets the quartzite cliffs ablaze with orange and purple hues, making it a prime spot for landscape photography.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–1.5 hours for the return walk and time to appreciate the rock art. Combine it with a visit to nearby Ormiston Gorge or Glen Helen Gorge for a full day of exploration along the Larapinta Drive. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light and cooler temperatures, especially in summer.
