Booderee National Park, on the southern shores of Jervis Bay, is a place where dazzling white beaches meet ancient Aboriginal heritage. Managed jointly by the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community and Parks Australia, this protected pocket of wilderness offers some of the purest coastal scenery on the NSW South Coast. The water is a striking turquoise, the sand squeaks underfoot, and the bush is alive with birdlife. It’s a must for anyone craving a wild, uncrowded beach day with a side of cultural insight.
Highlights & What to See
- Murrays Beach – Often described as one of Australia’s best beaches, this crescent of blindingly white sand and clear, calm water is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, or simply lazing on the sand.
- Steamers Beach – A wilder, more remote stretch of coast accessible via a short walk through coastal heath; expect powerful surf and dramatic rock formations.
- Booderee Botanic Gardens – Australia’s only Aboriginal-owned botanic garden, where you can wander through themed plant collections and learn about traditional uses of native flora.
- Capes Circuit Walk – An easy 3.7 km loop from Murrays Beach to the northern headland, offering panoramic views of Jervis Bay and the chance to spot dolphins and humpback whales (May–November).
- Aboriginal Cultural Sites – Look out for interpretive signs explaining the area’s significance to the Wreck Bay people, including shell middens and ancient stories etched into the landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
To do justice to the park, plan for a full day. Arrive early to snag a spot at Murrays Beach, then spend the morning swimming and snorkelling. After lunch, tackle the Capes Circuit Walk and visit the Botanic Gardens. If you’re short on time, a half-day focused on Murrays Beach and the walk is still worthwhile, but you’ll miss the gardens and the quieter corners. The park is also a lovely overnight stop if you’re camping at one of the well-equipped campgrounds.
