South Coast

Stretching south from Sydney to the Victorian border, the New South Wales South Coast is a blissful ribbon of golden beaches, national parks, and laid-back seaside towns. The Pacific Ocean laps at its eastern edge, while the escarpment of the Great Dividing Range rises to the west. This is a region made for road trips, with the Grand Pacific Drive winding past sea cliffs and through coastal rainforest. Expect excellent seafood, a thriving café culture, and a pace of life that encourages you to slow down and breathe the salt air.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To truly appreciate the South Coast, plan for at least 5 to 7 days if you’re driving from Sydney. This allows you to break the journey into manageable legs: Sydney to Kiama (2 hours), Kiama to Batemans Bay (1.5 hours), and Batemans Bay to Merimbula (2 hours). Spend two nights in each main hub to explore the national parks, beaches, and local dining. If you have less time, focus on the Jervis Bay and Kiama area for a long weekend.
