Stretching nearly a kilometre into the shimmering waters of Hervey Bay, Urangan Pier is a beloved icon of the Fraser Coast. Originally built in 1913 as a deep-water coal and timber loading facility, today it's a peaceful promenade for walkers, anglers, and sunset seekers. The weathered timber planks and salt-bleached pylons create a nostalgic backdrop, while the bay offers constant views of migrating humpback whales (July–November) and the distant outline of K'gari (Fraser Island).
Highlights & What to See
- Sunset Stroll: The pier's full 868-metre length is perfect for an evening walk, with the sky turning shades of orange and pink over the bay. Bring a camera – the reflections on the wet sand at low tide are spectacular.
- Fishing & Crabbing: A favourite spot for locals, the pier is dotted with anglers hoping to catch whiting, bream, flathead, and the occasional mackerel. No licence is needed for the pier itself, and crabbing for mud crabs is popular in the nearby channels.
- Whale-Watching Platform: During winter and spring, the pier's end offers a front-row seat to humpback whale antics. You'll often see mothers teaching calves to breach – a truly magical experience.
- Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens: Adjacent to the pier carpark, these lush gardens feature walking trails, a Japanese garden, and a café. They're a lovely spot for a picnic before or after your pier walk.
- Urangan Boat Harbour: Just south of the pier, this working harbour is where whale-watching tours and ferries to K'gari depart. Grab fish and chips from one of the waterfront takeaways and watch the boats come in.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Urangan Pier – enough for a leisurely walk to the end and back, plus some time fishing or enjoying the views. If you want to combine it with the botanic gardens or a harbour-side lunch, allow half a day. For photographers, the golden hour at sunrise or sunset is unmissable, so plan accordingly. The pier is flat and easy, suitable for all fitness levels and wheelchair users.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
